March 4: Sweet Medley

On my daughter's kitchen counter there is a box marked "Horse Apples."  Happily, it is not full of the kind of horse apples that horses leave behind wherever they go. These are apples for feeding horses-- very lucky horses! They are tiny, locally grown golden delicious apples. They are unwaxed, sweet and juicy. As far as I can tell, they are only being sold as horse apples because they are under-sized. I figured the horses wouldn't miss one, especially since we don't have any horses.

After I raided the fridge and made my salad, I noticed this box of cereal. My son-in-law is trying a gluten-free diet, and my daughter has been shopping for him. It looked pretty appealing, so I decided to add a little to my salad. It was serendipitous. I wouldn't buy this cereal, because I'm really trying not to eat grains at all, but I'd definitely recommend it to anyone who is looking for a healthy cereal.

The strawberries were a bit blah, so I added some sugar. I almost never do this for fruit salad, but if your fruit is not as ripe or juicy or tasty as you'd like, a light dusting of sugar can salvage it.

How-to: Core and slice one small or half a medium golden delicious apple. slice four or five strawberries and add a handful of seedless green grapes. Sprinkle with a scant teaspoon of sugar, toss, and let it sit at room temperature for ten to twenty minutes, tossing occasionally. When the sugar is melted and a syrup begins to form, scatter 1/4 cup granola or crunchy cereal on top and serve immediately.
